Iowa -- What Patients Should Know
Special circumstances.
- →Housing rights: Iowa Code 216.8B gives you the right to request an assistance-animal accommodation, and a landlord may not charge pet fees or deposits for an assistance animal.
- →Iowa requires a 30-day established provider relationship before a clinician may issue supporting documentation (Senate File 2268, effective July 1, 2024). Your letter cannot be issued on the day you are evaluated -- plan for at least a month.
- →Your clinician must hold an active Iowa license in good standing, have personal knowledge of your disability-related need, and affirm the connection between that need and your animal.
- →The Iowa Civil Rights Commission publishes a standardized Health Care Professional Form that housing providers may ask you to use.
- →ESAs do not have public-accommodation access rights in Iowa. Misrepresenting an animal as a service animal in a public place is a simple misdemeanor (Iowa Code 216C.11).
